Free Church Camps – Week 1

The first week of Free Church Youth Camps is nearly over for this year with children and young adults taking part in a variety of activities in Oswestry, Helensburgh and Comrie.
The ever-popular Oswestry camp in Shropshire hosts S1 – S3 children. Over the week they took part in adventure activities, fun games, bonfire bible chats with the highlight as always being the visit to Alton Towers. Miriam Stone who helps lead the camp said, “We have had much to be thankful for this week. We have been thinking about what it means to be apart of Gods kingdom. The campers have engaged really well asking insightful questions and learning new concepts. They have also enjoyed a wide variety of activities from Alton Towers, mountain boarding, archery, to onsite wide games and water games. We have been blessed with amazing weather and the pool has been a great relief i the heat! There’s has been such a great spirit of community and friendship and we are all sad it all over for another year.”
In Helensburgh, young S2-S6 footballers gathered for a week to play the ‘beautiful game’. It isn’t all just about football though, the campers engage with the big issues of life and faith throughout the week as well.
Senior Football Leader Rod Morrison said, “Another week at camp is flying past too quickly. We’ve been enjoying the fantastic weather with some top quality, fiercely contested football on show. Taking a break from football yesterday, the boys had a round of footgolf, before burning some rubber on the go-kart track. We’ve also managed to squeeze in some World Cup viewing in our spare time.”

“Our evening programme of talks has been exploring the Gospel of Mark and this has provoked some lively discussion with the boys. In the mornings, the leaders have been taking turns in sharing from some of their favourite passages in the Bible.”
“Overall, it’s been an excellent week with great food, friendship and chat.”
P5 – P7 children have been in Comrie all this week experiencing Forest Laser Quest, a visit to the Safari Park, dynamic dance-offs, messy games and chats about Jesus as their best friend. Leader Murray Graham said, “The camp has run smoothly with leaders and campers thoroughly enjoying themselves. We have 23 mini theologians who are making much of Jesus and his Gospel!”
As one set of camps come to a close, others are just beginning. The second Oswestry Junior Camp, as well as the Oswestry Senior Camp, start tomorrow and on Saturday it’s the turn of Kincraig Girls, Renfrew Juniors and Junior Football.
Free Church Camps Co-ordinator Laura MacAuley said, “In total, next week there will be 164 kids hearing the Gospel every day and having a great time doing all sorts of activities from football to go-karting, high-ropes to canoeing, theme parks, laser tag, swimming, cinema, looney Olympics and lots of other fun-packed activities.”
Continue to pray for the campers and leaders as they begin to head back home as well as the other camps still to take place.
